MedTech Review 2022 + Real Stories About PEMF (part 1)

Confirming Therapeutic Efficacy with a Test Drive
By Josh Schueller, PT
Edited by: IPHA News Editorial Team

As a clinical professional (aspiring to stay current with patient care solutions), I have spent the better part of my career undergoing continued education and research on some of the most remarkable protocols and technologies.  Some (at the time) were experimental at best or did not exist during my training years and are now part of major medical device industries.  This is why I chose to pursue the noble task of FIELD RESEARCH and a beta-tester of non-invasive healing modalities-- test-driving and reviewing innovations that appear to show significant results throughout the community of pain and injury sufferers.

Since November of 2021, I have joined the crusade architected by Dr. Robert Bard back in the early 1980's when he test drove the first 3D Doppler Ultrasound, at a time when "most of the medical community thought it was a waste of time!". The recognized "cancer detective" and seasoned medical publisher helped found the Integrative Pain Healers Alliance (IPHA) where an educational project (MedTech Reviews) was a clinical research initiative to support unbiased testing to confirm or challenge claims of medical device developers for their utility, performance and efficacy.

The non-invasive therapeutic device movement is highly based on what we consider INVISIBLE THERAPEUTICS.  From neurostimulation to electromagnetism to ultrasound therapeutics, these concepts have become the basis to some of the most remarkable innovations going as far back as the late 1800's. A significant scientific landmark (among others) is the discovery of electrical transduction therapy founded by NIKOLA TESLA in 1893 for his pioneer work in advanced electromagnetic field frequency.  This forged the backbone of  what is now known as the Pulsed Elecromagnetic Field Thereapy (PEMF) and the Transcranial Magnetic stimulation (TMS) to the philosophy of implementing electgromagnetic fields to stimulate cells.  It is this same paradigm in patient care technology that enforces the very backbone of holistic and non-surgical ("no more scalpel") movement. From Treatment Notes: PEMF Response
January 11, 2022

Overview of CASE 1: 32 yo male with history or right knee pain.  4 weeks ago, he slipped on ice and had partial tear to his right MCL.  Initial Treatment consisted of ice, bracing, and OTC medications.  He struggled with walking and standing with pain levels at a 7/10 + additional difficulties with getting into his truck and squatting.

"BEN" works as a professional plumber where his average work day was comprised of a lot of kneeling, squatting, twisting and contorting his body in order to reach pipes and install heavy objects upwards of fifty pounds.  Being able to depend on his legs (knees) to perform his duties as a plumber is essential.

Four weeks prior to meeting him,  Ben slipped on a piece of ice and twisted his knee resulting in significant pain and a major loss of function.  (Image 1 is an indirect representation of his imaging).  According to his physician's report, it was determined that he had a grade 2 MCL (Medial Collateral Ligament) sprain in his right knee. [The MCL is located on the inside (medial) part of the knee and its main function to a restraint to valgus stresses on the knee especially with slight flexion- running from the medial femur to tibia.]  Ben stated that he heard a slight pop when slipped, then felt immediate pain on the inside of his knee.  He also noted moderate swelling in the knee and after the injury, his knee felt like it was going to “give out on him” in standing.

It must be noted that there are various degrees of MCL sprains/tear; Grade 1 is identified as mild pain, minimum swelling and good stability.  Grade 2 is identified as moderate pain, moderate instability, feeling ‘’loose’’ and swelling.  A Grade 3 is the most serious and is when the ligament is completely torn and very unstable.   Ben was diagnosed with a Grade 2 MCL sprain. (Image 2)  He has been wearing a brace with all activities and is expected a normal healing duration of 4-6 weeks.  After week 4, he continued wearing the brace with all activities - and upon observation, his posture clearly showed favoring the right knee while standing, walking and squatting.  Pain levels were reported at 7/10 with all weight bearing activities. He consistently showed soreness and pain at 4/10 at rest.  Due to the instability from this injury, Ben would have difficulty climbing a ladder, getting into his truck, and walking on uneven surfaces.

"A NEW TREATMENT IDEA..."
As part of my research study, I offered him an exploratory treatment using a PEMF machine starting on Monday.  The initial treatment consisted of 15 minutes at 7 intensity level (0-10) in a sitting position.  He continued to have the second treatment on Wednesday 15 minutes at 8 intensity.  The third treatment 15 minutes 8.5 intensity on the Friday of the same week.

After the first treatment, he reported 50% decrease pain with activities. He had no soreness at rest.  He continued to wear the brace but showed full weight bearing in standing.  The Second visit he reported a 75% improvement with pain levels.  He was able to walk normally and climb ladders and squat.  By the third treatment he was approximately 90% recovered and returning to normal activities with zero pain and only mild soreness in the medial portion of the knee.  By using high-frequency PEMF, Ben expressed that he was able to see significant improvement in pain levels, stability and confidence in his right knee that he couldn’t demonstrate with traditional treatments.

CONCLUSION
From this review, (and my initial study of it's scientific breakdown), one can assess that the injury's exposure to Pulsed Electromagnetic Waves emitted by the tester device can conceptually slow or stop the inflammatory and pain mediators, increase local blood flow to the injured area and allow normal cell interactions to occur.  By interacting with the body's normal magnetic fields, improved healing can occur. Once can even conclude from what appears to be an enhancement of the body's normal healing process can potentially speed up the amount of time needed to recovery from injuries like MCL sprains.

**Prior to using PEMF or other treatment options, consulting with a health care professional is recommended

HEALING 101: KREBS CYCLE AND THE SCIENCE OF SELF REGENERATION

 Written By: Josh Schueller, PT

As a Physical Therapist and a patient analyst, I find myself constantly referencing course work from my college days to explain to patients how modern therapy actually works.  Today's patient has a hungry mind equipped to handle deeper explanations about how their therapies actually affect them.  Because of this, it behooves me to share content from my own medical texts to explain how the latest "invisible" therapeutic innovations work on them.   Such modern breakthroughs include: Stem Cell & PRP therapies, PEMF & Biofeedback technologies, Transcranial Stimulation, Laser Acupuncture, Neurostim therapeutics etc-- just to name a few. Meanwhile, I am equally impressed at our Google surfing community that can retain much of the same medical information my career was founded on.

Just the other day, a 21 year old patient with spinal cord injury actually started asking me how my neurostim device affects cellular regeneration and THE KREBS CYCLE.

So my presentation begins.

HOW THE BODY ACTUALLY HEALS
From burns to infections, inflammation to tears and breaks, the body's regenerative qualities can be  best illustrated through its metabolic design - mitigating its ability to heal itself on a cellular level.  Upon physical damage or disease, self recovery involves the regeneration and repair of living tissue(s), organs and its functions.  THERAPY covers external influences on the body's cellular performance to restore damaged areas either by replacing worn/dead tissue with new ones. [1]

For something like the KREBS CYCLE, I usually start such complex scientific explanations with my patients using metaphors and analogies.

"Krebs cycle (otherwise known as citric acid cycle) is like the process of converting your paycheck into cash and going shopping with it. When you receive a paycheck (glucose) through direct deposit that paycheck is deposited into the bank (mitochondria).  Throughout this process there are fees (byproducts) that must be paid in order to receive the money.  These fees (NADH, GTP, CO2 etc.) are an essential part of the process.  The result is currency. In order to receive the money (ATP) it must go through to the ATM (electron transport System).  When you withdraw the money (ATP) you can spend on goods or services (energy production). As money is essential to the survival of the economy the Krebs Cycle is essential to the survival of the organism."

Academic Breakdown: Krebs Cycle
By:  IPHA/Pain Healers Alliance newsletter

The Krebs’s Cycle is a multi-step chemical reaction that is the main source of energy for cells during Aerobic respiration.  Also called the TCA (T
riCarboxylic Acid) Cycle or Citric Acid Cycle, the Krebs cycle occurs in eukaryotes (cells with a nucleus) in the matrix of the mitochondria and the cytosol of prokaryotes (no distinct nucleus).   In a living organism, the TCA cycle is a series of reactions in which oxidation of Acetic Acid/glucose provides energy for storage in phosphate bonds (ATP).  Fuel for this comes from lipids and carbohydrates, which produce Acetyl-CoA.  These reactions are the major source of energy in all living organisms.

Critical in the building blocks for synthesis of fatty acids, steroids, cholesterol, amino acids for building proteins and purines and pyrimidines used in the synthesis of DNA. The byproducts of the Krebs’s Cycle are 3 NADH, 1 FADHL, 1 GTP, and 2 CO2. (3)  The cycle runs twice for glucose and then the electron transport chain produces ATP. The electron transport chain is a series of reactions inside the cell whose purpose is the formation of ATP.  By studying the rates, by-products, enzymatic activity and qualities in the processes of metabolism the potential to draw conclusion about and investigate the efficiency of therapies.

Glucose into mitochondria to go through Krebs Cycle (NADH, FADHL, GTP, CO2 byproducts) electron transport chain into ATP (energy)

Disorders of the Krebs Cycle such as 2-Oxoglutaric aciduria and fumarase deficiency affects mitochondrial function and maintenance.  This can cause developmental delays, severe neurologic problems in infants like mental retardation.  Clinical presentation of mitochondrial depletion syndrome is hypotonia, progressive dystonia, muscle atrophy and hearing impairments. (5)

TCA & CANCER
Traditional cancer treatments have been relatively effective, but with significant side effects and a high reoccurrence rate.  Alternative treatment approaches are gaining in medical significant and are becoming increasingly more difficult to ignore.  Identifying changes in the Krebs cycle could hold the key to early detection of chronic diseases, including cancers.  Early detection is significant in establishing more efficient treatment programs with less side effects.  Establishing safe and effective treatments for chronic disease can improve survival, but can also improve the quality of life for many.  In the future, dying with cancer not from cancer is becoming more likely.

Emerging evidence that certain cancer cells rely heavily on TCA cycle for energy production and macromolecule synthesis has been discovered. Alterations of the TCA cycle play a pivotal role in oncogenesis and inflammation.  The hypothesis is mitochondrial dysfunction is a pre-curser for chronic disease such as cancer. Oncogenic mutation in TCA cycle can produce altered mitochondrial metabolism as a mechanism for cancer initiation.  Targeting cancer metabolism with potential therapy drugs that interfere with glycolysis, TCA cycle, lipid biosynthesis and other pathways that tumor cells overuse vs normal cells could be instrumental in solving the cancer puzzle. Majority of cancers generate ATP through the mitochondria.  Increase in mitochondrial dysfunction can be an early indication of disease or cancer. The TCA cycle is being recognized as a key player in certain cancers involving enzyme dysfunction.

Currently, regenerative medicine is becoming more and more mainstream.  Traditional surgery and chemotherapy and radiation show a high reoccurrence of cancer.  Stem cells are showing good promise in treatment of many cancers. Stem Cells function serves as novel delivery platform by targeting primary metastatic tumors. Stem cells have shown to decrease tumor volume and extend survival in preliminary studies. Unique properties are found in regenerative medicine such as immunosuppression and mitigation towards cancer can assist in gene therapy applications.  Many regenerative medicines have anti-tumor properties.  Natural killer (NK) cells may have the ability to attack tumor/cancer cells/infected cells at the early stage.

VIEWPOINTS

ROBERT KORNFELD, D.P.M.
 - Founder at Chronic Foot Pain Center, NY
When considering energy production and utilization, we must first look to the immune system and its ability to detoxify, repair, replace and replenish. This means a thorough understanding of our patient’s epigenetics and how their unique diet, lifestyle and environment influence their genes. The elimination of refined foods, preservatives and chemicals can assist in minimizing toxicity. Movement and exercise can assist in speeding up the basal metabolic rate, thereby shortening the time the body needs to work daily on working toward homeostasis. Minimizing toxicity and speeding up the basal metabolic rate is energy-preserving. In addition, stress management can help to dampen the adrenal response which has been shown to be a direct inhibitor of immune function. Also, sleep hygiene is critical for our patients as it is in deep states of sleep that the body does its best work to achieve homeostasis.

ON RESEARCH
By: Dr. Robert L Bard (An excerpt from "The Modern Patient" - (c) 2021 IPHA/Pain Healers Alliance newsletter

Since the advent of the information age, today's highly self-educated patient holds the keys to accessing the widest collection of available health solutions - and the power to decide what is truly right for them. Everything from the latest in diagnostic and treatment modalities to the vast encyclopedia of alternative solutions (ie. holistic, naturopathic and integrative), WEB RESEARCH forever changed the world of health, wellness and medicine, availing review of top educators and experts sharing their insight about the latest innovations, protocols and strategies.  This comprises the personal course of our 'research-happy' culture and the patient's FREEDOM OF CHOICE.

To "captain one's own ship" is to make smarter decisions on who to listen to and to commit to a plan that works best for you. In a 2019 Cancer RMA Firefighters Conference, clinical immunologist Dr. Jesse Stoff stated a powerful message that “...there is no one answer to cancer! There are many different strategies for approaching and dealing with cancer [aside from] chemo, radiation & surgery. Other proven options like Immunotherapy have been around for decades too‐ performing in many cases with lightning‐fast response, much less toxicity, and much better overall survival.” (source link)  This resounding statement holds true for the importance of personal leadership with educated patients and putting us all in the drivers' seat of our destiny.

Non-Invasive means "NO MORE CUTTING": Welcome to the age of the TRICORDER

Early 60's pop culture represented a caricature of our western medical science as appears in the adventure board game called "OPERATION".  It simulated a nerve-racking surgical malpractice scenario with the naked Cavity Sam's many exposed plastic vital organs.  And then there's the ever-popular Star Trek line of accessories like Dr. "Bones" McCoy's Medical TRICORDER - an innovative marvel that projected a non-invasive medical future.

I recently reunited with these toys in my attic as part of a spring cleaning frenzy.  Juxtaposed, they illustrated the notable evolution in our philosophy behind patient care.

"Trekkies" (like me) grew up to witness a vast line of creative concepts about a probable future come to real life.  Tools such as the personal computer, the food replicator, the 3D printer, the cell phone, the tractor beam, laser technology, holograms and yes, the Medical TRICORDER! Once creations of theatrical prop-mastery from a campy sci-fi show predicted and undoubtedly inspired true scientific innovations that helped shape our technology age of today.

THE "4-D" DOPPLER SCANNER:
Non-Invasive Targeting of Surgical Complications
Recently, a good friend got into a little car trouble and rang me up  to ask for a lift to his radiologist in NYC.  This visit opened my eyes to an entire world of innovation that would otherwise go unnoticed if not for the consult with Dr. Robert Bard.  This man sounded like the real deal when it comes to finding foreign bodies and anomalies under the skin- outperforming X-rays, CT scans or MRI's. His 4D system (and his expertise) gives the patient a comprehensive report in complete real-time motion viewing from all dimensions and depths of the injured area.  His ability to study an area's blood flow gives much better information on the causes and direction of inflammation, growths, micro-fractures and tumors.

He had a small waiting room of about 10 seats but what was unusual was how fast everyone came and went.  (I recall having an MRI and it took hours). It was then that I discovered what was behind the curtain;  he had a high-powered Sonogram that could scan just about anything on a near-cellular level.  From prostate and breast tumors, to cardiac and circulation issues, to the smallest splinter lodged under someone's skin-- Dr. Bard can target things with his machines so accurately in just a matter of minutes!

... Remember the TRICORDER?

Think about Dr. McCoy waving that little scanning wand over a patient and getting all sorts of data on their maladies in a matter of seconds... that's pretty much what you have with Dr. Bard's equipment.  My friend was here for a PRE-OP scan of his hand injured from a car accident.  Prior to undergoing a surgical procedure to repair torn ligaments, he was prescribed a digital scan to check for any potential issues under the skin.  Sure enough, Dr. Bard found broken glass, frayed nerves, unusual clots and damaged tendons—things not shown on the x-ray that would have created complications in surgery.  Bard calls these things "land mines" associating them to hidden, unexpected problems in what would start out as a “routine” operative repair. Digital 4-D Pre-Op imaging alerted the surgeon to the new issues and specialists were called in to support the more complicated procedure.

After he drew up the full report, we had a lengthier chat about how important this process has become.  He has volumes of stories of "found treasures" under the skin that might have gone unnoticed if not for his process.  His focus is typically reading cancerous tumors where he can monitor the blood flow in real time to determine malignancy.  But he says that lately, more and more surgeons are calling to have access to his uniquely innovative technology.

Dr. Bard is just one of a growing population of medical professionals who are in mad pursuit of "future-tech" and a safer yet more performance-driven innovations.  My continued research uncovered just how much science has truly advanced in the ways of diagnostic and non-invasive technology.  A common search term for this is called 'telemedicine'- manufactured by a handful of giants in the field including an MIT-based company called Terason (a branch of Teratech Corp).  A presentation on their portable ultrasound devices are currently being used for and expanded number of environments including marine vessels and the aeronautics & space travel.

(Excerpt from press release courtesy of Terason) On September 15, 2016, Terason's technology was chosen as the scanner of choice for the France/China Cardiospace mission to study how astronauts’ cardiovascular system adapted to microgravity conditions.   The new TianGong-2 orbital module was launched from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, carrying a broader range of devices including Cardiospace, a joint effort of CNES and CMSEO/ACC (China Manned Space Engineering Office/Astronaut Center of China).

Cardiospace is designed to study how the cardiovascular system adapts during human spaceflight. Its results will of course benefit astronaut health but also public health, as cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of mortality worldwide. CNES coordinated development of the instruments making up Cardiospace, in particular Terason’s Doppler laser and ultrasound scanner that will measure micro-circulation and macro-circulation. The intuitive nature of the Terason 3200 system, coupled with the lightweight, small footprint and crystal clear imagery will yield a wealth of science data that could serve to determine new joint space missions for China’s future space station.

SNOW SHOVELING DO’S AND DON’TS

Tis the season! The weather gets colder and the snow arrives looking beautiful. But it’s the removal of that snow that can become a major problem for many people. Snow shoveling is a seasonal torturous occurrence causing a variety of back injuries and pain every winter. Snow implies cold weather. Cold muscles are more easily injured, since they are taut and tight making them far more prone to cramping or spasms. This leads to musculoskeletal misalignments and distortions. But have no fear!! There are many things one can do to prevent back pain and back-related injuries.

Before even taking a step outside, take a few minutes and do some stretching and calisthenics. Be sure to include your back, shoulders, arms, and legs. Dress warm and wear layered clothing. It’ll help keep your muscles warm and cushion your landing in case of an unexpected fall. Also wear boots or shoes with excellent traction to prevent falling on the icy surfaces under the snow. Now you’re ready to shovel!

Pick the right shovel for you. It is best to use a shovel that is best suited to your height and weight. A smaller blade and a proper length will put less stress and strain on your spine and body. Choose a shovel that is ergonomically correct - one that has a curved handle. This will minimize the need to bend and reach. Also consider using a shovel with a plastic blade, which is lighter as opposed to a heavier, metal blade.

If it’s possible push the snow to one side and avoid throwing it as much as possible. If you have to throw the snow, avoid twisting and turning – instead, position yourself to throw straight ahead at the snow pile. Remember to stand with your feet about shoulder width apart, the shovel close to your body, and bend at the knees. Tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the snow and be sure to deposit it close to where you are shoveling. Don’t shovel quickly, instead work at a comfortable pace befitting your age and strength. Shovel light to moderate amounts of snow per shovel load instead of one large scoop of snow to further avoid sprains and strains. Do not overexert yourself. And if you get tired, rest until you feel ready to begin again. If experience any pain, stop immediately.

Snow shoveling is a strenuous exercise. So take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.  And when you have had more than your “share of fun,” remember it’s also okay to pay the neighborhood kids to finish that driveway or sidewalk. Happy and safe shoveling!

MUSCLE STRAINS CAN CAUSE PERMANENT PHYSICAL DAMAGE

By: Dr. Robert L. Bard

Muscle pain is something that is easy to overlook. Since it’s usually a mild dull pain and does not hinder daily activities unless at an extreme stage, people tend to wait too long before consulting a physician.

There may be two kinds of a muscle injury. You many have a sprain (which is the stretching or tearing of the muscle and the tendon) or a strain (which is the stretching or tearing of the ligament).
Also known as Rhabdomyolysis, muscle injury is caused by a breakdown of the fibers in the muscle. This breakdown triggers the release of myoglobin into the blood which can even cause kidney damage.

A muscular strain can be identified by other common household names such as a spasm, cramp or a pulled muscle. These pains are usually associated with the neck, shoulders, and even pain in the lower back.

Causes of Muscle Strain
Muscle strain may be caused by over stretching of the muscle which cause the muscle to tear or cramp. This over stretching can occur as a result of physical exertion. Over exertion may even lead to permanent muscle damage and may even be triggered by daily activities. This may lead to limited and painful movement (Holmes, 2011).
First degree strains such as those caused by a crick in your neck do not usually result in permanent muscle damage.
Second and third degree strains, however, may be caused by high pressure activities such as:
  • Running
  • Reaching with the arms
  • Climbing
  • Turning the head
  • Turning the neck
  • Twisting the back
Symptoms of Muscle Strain
Symptoms exhibited as a result of a strain may vary according to the degree of the injury and should be carefully evaluated in order to avoid permanent muscle damage (NYU Langone, n.d.).
First Degree Strains
Typical symptoms which may also be experienced in first degree strain include:
  • Soreness and pain
  • Limited and painful movement
  • Muscle twitching
  • Hard knot
Second Degree Strains
Second Degree Strains may exhibit additional symptoms such as
  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Blue or black mark
Third Degree Strains
Third degree strains which involve a tearing of the muscle may also exhibit the following symptoms:
  • Bunched up fibers which can be felt on the skins surface
  • Visible bruising due to muscle bleeding
Diagnosis
In case of a muscle injury which may have been caused due to unusual physical activity, its best to go to a physician for a diagnosis. Before diagnosis, the doctor may ask certain questions about your lifestyle at work or at home. In addition, the doctor will want to know when you noticed the symptoms and whether any irregular physical activity was done. Once diagnosed the doctor may suggest rest and placing ice on the strain. Additional treatments may include:
  • Compression
  • Medications
  • Heat
  • Brace
  • Stretching Exercises
  • Rotation exercises
  • Chin exercises
Some problems may be aggravated over time simply due to incorrect posture. Your doctor may tell you about the appropriate posture which may help avoid future injuries (NYU Langone, n.d.)

THE ABC’s OF ESSENTIAL OILS

by: Dr. Steven Riess

Essential oils are liquids that are extracted from plants including, but not limited to, the seeds, barks, leaves, stems, roots, flowers and fruit. As we begin to understand the power of essential oils in holistic healthcare – it is of absolute necessity of obtaining pure therapeutic-grade essential oils. Chemists can replicate, but it would be nearly impossible to recreate the oils in a laboratory. It’s like the difference in using real vanilla extract vs. imitation vanilla extract.

Essential oils embody the regenerative, protective, and immune-strengthing properties of plants, bushes, and trees.  They can support our bodies in various ways:

  • By promoting relaxation
  • Support healthy immune function
  • Calm tension and nerves
  • Promote healthy metabolism
  • Uplift mood
  • Promote emotional health
  • Help reduce occasional upset stomach
  • Support muscle and joint function
  • Increase positive feelings
  • Help decrease stress
  • Improve appearance of the skin
  • Provide antioxidants
  • Repel insects
  • Soothe occasional skin irritations

Essential oils have been around since the beginning of early civilizations. Egyptian papyri and Chinese manuscripts describe the medical use of aromatics used thousands of years ago. Additionally, there are references to aromatics, ointments and incenses in the Bible and Torah (such as frankincense, myrrh, rosemary etc.).

Ultimately, the only thing that affects change in the body is our brains! If we can stimulate the brain – we can affect change! The blood-brain barrier is a filtering mechanism between the circulating blood and the brain tissue and cerebrospinal fluid. Some essential oils can cross through this barrier and directly interact with brain cells and impact the brain therapeutically and naturally! However, not all essential oils are able to cross over and yet they can still affect the brain through the sense of smell by activating the olfactory bulb in the brain’s limbic system. This system is a group of related structures in the brain that are responsible for processing emotion, memory, and smell.

Essential oils, whether you use them topically, aromatically, or internally is just another NATURAL way to help support our bodies and enhance our lives!

AN OVERVIEW ABOUT KOREN SPECIFIC TECHNIQUE (KST)

By: Dr. Steven Riess

Koren Specific Technique (KST) is one of the newer methods of Chiropractic. Developed by Dr. Tedd Koren, a chiropractor – it is derived from other chiropractic techniques, Chinese medicine and his own discoveries. It is a breakthrough approach to patient care because of its unique system of analysis -using a biofeedback reflex system. It is made by carefully observing changes at the back of the head called the “occipital drop”. The drop varies in relation to the challenges presented to the body. These challenges may be physical, emotional, mental and/or chemical. By observing the “occipital drop”, the KST practitioner can determine the most beneficial position to place the patient and also the position in which to make a corrective adjustment.

The adjustment is often used with an instrument called an “Arthrostim” as its method of creating the changes needed in the body to help the body correct itself (although finger pressure can be used). The active end of the “Arthrostim” vibrates at 12-14 cycles per second which is pleasant and helps the muscles to relax. This instrument makes it possible to quickly and easily make adjustments to the body for a positive and beneficial change!

With KST you receive gentle, specific corrections to your spine, structural system and other parts of your body. The KST practitioner is able to quickly and easily check and address areas of nerve stress/nerve interference/subluxations wherever they may arise. This includes your cranial bones, TMJ, spinal column, sacrum, coccyx, hips, discs, ribs, shoulders, knees, feet, hands and anything else that needs correcting.

Hering’s Law of Cure is the basis of all healing. “All cure starts within out, from the head down and in reverse order as the symptoms have appeared or been suppressed”.  The real power of KST is unlocking this ability within the body. The process of improvement often times involves revisiting the symptoms of the past. Many patients will “retrace” through some of these symptoms as they improve. “Retracing” may vary in intensity with each patient. It is seen as an unwinding of stresses and traumas both physical and emotional. Older injuries, older distortions, older subluxations and older symptoms may surface at later sessions. Patients have reported “cleansing” symptoms such as sweating, diarrhea, fever, rash, etc. Not all patients experience retracing on a physical or conscious level. Sometimes patients experience an increase in dreams or unusual dreams as another form of “retracing”.

For instance, let’s say the last illness you had was a sinus infection and a suppressive medication was used to stop any sneezing, coughing, dripping nose or sinus drainage. In order for the body to properly heal we must believe we can heal and allow the body to heal from within out. It must eliminate these toxins and mucous that were suppressed at this time. Since this was the last illness it is the easiest for the body to heal.  Orthodox medicine generally believes that because symptoms are suppressed the problem is cured, or by removing the organ, which is not functioning correctly, it can cure the problem.

Our purpose as practitioners of this specialized modality is to release stresses and traumas from your mind/body complex so that you may be physically and mentally healthier. Symptoms resulting from nerve stress / subluxations such as headaches, migraines, dizziness, vertigo, neck pain, TMJ, tinnitus, pain/numbness/tingling down the arm into fingers, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, disc problems, leg pains/sciatica, knee issues, plantar fasciitis, stomach disorders, allergies, colds, breathing problems, emotional and mental stress etc. improve dramatically as the body goes through the healing process.

SEARCHING FOR THE RIGHT DOCTOR FOR YOU

By: Laguna El Guapo

To seek a SECOND OPINION is a patient's right as a cautious and educated consumer. This measure is also a smart financial coverage encouraged by insurance companies geared to prevent much higher claims from costly or 'wrongful' procedures.

Whether you're searching for a primary care physician or a specialist, shopping for any doctor can be quite a challenge. Ingredients for finding a professional that you can trust with your life rely heaviest on their reputation, expertise and qualifications found under smart research methods.

REFERRALS: Though medical professionals are now participating in the commercial world of marketing (such as broadcast and podcast commercials, youtube videos, social media promotion and public relations campaigns), the largest and most popular method of deciding on a doctor is still word of mouth. At least starting with a recommendation from a friend, colleague or family member, getting positive feedback about a practitioner through others' experience is a great place to begin.

RESEARCH: Once you have a name (or several names to choose from), the next answer is conducting online searches. With more than a decade of evolution, the internet provides a wide expanse of research options of about any professional. From patient reviews, local directories, educational contributions, social media connections and background checks, the web helps with so many ways to check out any professional for any success as well as not-so-good-news about them.

Meanwhile, as you proceed with your online research, employ 'smart searching' by knowing where to look and what to look for. Do not make quick judgments about an individual based on a sexy looking website. There are many doctors out there that have little marketing sense that pay more attention (as they should) in working with their patients than working with a fancy graphic design firm. On the other hand, doctors' websites may come with video testimonials, news coverage, educational backgrounds and a list of their partners- all information that help describe the strength of their capabilities. All doctors carry a varied set of strong points academically and professionally and it's up to you to find the clues you need to make that choice.
Narrowing down your candidates also means being organized. Have a folder and notes on significant information gathered online and/or from others. Save links that show vital information from reputable websites that you can return to for comparative reviewing. In the end, sizing up a doctor is all about the collected facts about them that you choose to dictate your decision.

E-REVIEWS: Affirming our freedom of speech is the internet's best function. Reviews, ratings and consumer reviews are aplenty - allowing you an inside look at a doctor's performance but discern with caution when finding either a "sugary" five-star comment or a demoralizing bad opinion in YELP (or the various popular review websites). Over time, you'll find many nay-sayers freely and maliciously bashing a professional for something completely unrealistic like "They had me sitting in the waiting room for 25 minutes without anything to read - so unprofessional!" In other words, discern the SOURCE of the review and conduct a fair amount of research instead of taking the first available opinion.

MEET AND GREET: Doctors come with their own personalities that may or may not match yours. During the first consultation, you may get the best clues as to whether or not this particular doctor is for you. Just as with any other relationship-based professional, follow your instincts during the inquiry of your ailments. You can usually tell if they're rushing to get 'done with you' or if they truly care about exploring your issues through genuine concern for problem-solving. Select a doctor who shows true interest in recommending current techniques, applications and solutions and one who is open to remedies outside of the pharmaceutical box. Know that the healthcare field is a complex field of information that is constantly growing and requires continued education to provide the most current care.

YOUR COMFORT LEVEL: Intuition is your inner voice telling you what's right for you. Your comfort level can be driven by a host of logical and illogical factors varying from the doctor's gender, their location, the design style of their office, their bedside manner or something as silly as their hairstyle. We may not always be able to identify what it is about a doctor that you are either drawn to or may have some apprehension about but at the end of the day, it's how you feel about that practitioner.
The ultimate answer to matching with the "right" doctor is truly based on a per-patient case. Where recommendations may fail, follow your gut, research as much as you can and remember, if you're in doubt or have concerns, NEVER SETTLE! There's always a second, third or fourth opinion and a wide list of other docs to choose from.
